WTT Star Contender commences in Lanzhou with Timo Boll making winning return

LANZHOU, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Lanzhou 2023 World Table Tennis (WTT) Star Contender commenced at the Lanzhou Olympic Sports Center on Wednesday.

On the first day of the main draw, German icon and former world No. 1 Timo Boll returned to WTT Series action following a lengthy injury absence and made a winning start, defeating Kang Dong-soo from South Korea 3-1.

In other men's encounters, China's Liang Yanning and Yuan Licen, An Jae-hyun of South Korea, and Japanese paddler Shunsuke Togami also triumphed to advance to the men's singles round of 32.

On the women's side, world No. 47 Liu Weishan secured a 3-2 victory over her compatriot Li Yake, while He Zhuojia, Wu Yangchen, and Chen Yi also won.

In the mixed doubles, Chinese paddlers began well, as Lin Gaoyuan and Wang Manyu, Lin Shidong and Kuai Man both registered 3-0 victories in the first round, while their teammates Liang Jingkun and Qian Tianyi bested South Korean pair Cho Seung-min and Joo Cheon-hui 3-2 in a hard-fought match.

Also on Wednesday, two Chinese pairs were eliminated. In the women's doubles, Huang Yi Hua and Chen Szu Yu of Hong Kong, China rallied past Chinese duo Kuai Man and Zhang Rui 3-2, while in the men's doubles, Yuan Licen and Liang Jingkun were defeated 3-1 by another Hong Kong pair Li Hon Ming and Pau Yik Man.

Lanzhou 2023 marks the first time a WTT Star Contender event has been staged in China. The host nation dispatched a star-studded squad for the five-day tournament, including nine Hangzhou Asiad athletes. Enditem
