URUMQI, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Tarim Oilfield of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), China's leading oil and gas producer, has delivered over 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas to southern Xinjiang so far this year.

This figure, which marks a new record, represents a year-on-year increase of 1.3 billion cubic meters. This has helped ensure gas supply to residents in five prefectures of southern Xinjiang and promoted a low-carbon transition with an improved energy mix in these prefectures, the oil company said.

For a long time, residents in these prefectures mainly relied on firewood and coal for heating and cooking.

According to the calculation of Tarim Oilfield, 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas is the equivalent to 7.98 million tonnes of standard coal, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 8.47 million tonnes.

Over the years, the oilfield has supplied 55.8 billion cubic meters of natural gas to southern Xinjiang, which has helped ensure economic development and a marked improvement to people's livelihoods.

Tarim Oilfield currently provides over 23 million cubic meters of natural gas a day to counties and cities in southern Xinjiang.

Located in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Tarim Basin is a major petroliferous basin in China, accounting for over 60 percent of the country's total onshore ultra-deep oil and gas resources. Enditem
