BEIJING, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China:

MEGA PROJECTS

China's state-owned assets regulator published a list on Wednesday of all of the mega-projects that were completed or started construction in 2023 by the country's central state-owned enterprises.

Among the projects that exemplified super engineering are the launch of Shenzhou-17 manned spaceship, the operation of China's new-generation "artificial sun" HL-3 in the high-confinement mode under a plasma current of 1 million amperes, and the kickstart of a new nuclear power unit using Hualong One, a domestically designed third-generation nuclear reactor.

PLANT DIVERSITY

Chinese researchers have recently revealed different mechanisms regulating plant diversity in tropical archipelagoes, according to the Chinese Academy of Sciences' South China Botanical Garden.

Researchers at the botanical garden selected two archipelagoes, including 16 tropical coral islands and 21 tropical continental islands, and analyzed the plant species diversity data and soil elements of 589 quadrats.

They found that the distribution pattern of plant species diversity in the two archipelagoes is in accordance with the classic biogeography species-area relationship theory, which dictates that the larger the island area, the higher the species diversity. But they also discovered that there are different mechanisms maintaining plant diversity in the two archipelagoes.

WIND FARM AT HIGH ALTITUDE

A large-scale wind power project, standing at an average altitude of 4,650 meters and with a total installed capacity of 100 megawatts, commenced operation on Monday in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

According to CHN Energy Investment Group (CHN Energy), the group of 25 wind turbines in Nagqu is expected to provide approximately 200 million kWh of electricity annually, saving around 60,000 tonnes of standard coal and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by about 160,000 tonnes. Enditem
