URUMQI, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- The first-ever Altai Mountains Winter Sports Games commenced on Monday night in Altay, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

The event brings together more than 150 athletes from countries surrounding the Altai Mountains, including Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, as well as representatives from China, primarily from cities and regions across Xinjiang.

Athletes will have competitions spanning seven sports and 37 sub-events, including speed skating, short track speed skating, figure skating, cross-country skiing, alpine skiing, snowboarding, and ski mountaineering.

Situated in the golden latitude zone for world-class skiing, the Altay region is recognized as one of China's premier natural skiing destinations.

"In the two days I've been here, I've noticed that the local preparations for the competition are thorough, and Altay has the capability to host high-level events," said Yerzhan Khimbinov, head of a delegation from Kazakhstan.

"We also believe that sport events can promote friendship among nations, and this event will undoubtedly be exciting." Enditem
