BEIJING, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Liu Handong, a former senior legislator of east China's Jiangsu Province, has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) over serious violations of Party discipline and laws, the country's top anti-graft agency said on Monday.

The decision came following an investigation into Liu, who was formerly a vice chairman of the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress, by the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision.

The investigation found that Liu had violated the Party's eight-point decision on improving Party and government conduct, accepting money and gifts in violation of regulations and attending banquets that could have affected his impartiality in the performance of his official duties.

Other misconducts included failing to report personal matters according to requirements, improperly assisting others in personnel appointments and promotions, and seeking benefits for his relatives, the statement said.

Liu was accused of taking undue advantage of his position to seek profits for others in matters such as land transfers and business operations, and illegally accepting huge amounts of money and gifts in return. He was also charged with abusing his power and causing particularly heavy losses to national interests.

These actions have gravely breached Party discipline rules and constituted serious duty-related crimes, according to the statement.

Liu's illicit gains will be confiscated, and his case will be transferred to procuratorial authorities for further examination and prosecution in accordance with the law, the statement said. Enditem
