BEIJING, March 22 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

PATENT FILINGS

According to the World Intellectual Property Organization, in 2023 China remained the top source with 69,610 international patent filings, slipping 0.6 percent from a year earlier, the first drop since 2002.

The slight fall in China's patent submissions indicates a shift within the country's IP sector from expanding in scale to focusing more on quality and high value, thereby enhancing genuine indigenous innovation.

SATELLITE LAUNCH

China on Thursday sent a group of satellites into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China.

These satellites will be used mainly for atmospheric environment detection, space environment monitoring, disaster prevention and reduction, and scientific experiments.

ORGAN TRANSPLANT

Chinese researchers successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig liver into a brain-dead person, where it functioned for 10 days, in a milestone case for the transplantation of animal organs into humans.

The study terminated on Wednesday according to the wishes of the recipient's family. The recipient was a patient with severe brain injury who was certified as brain dead in three evaluations. Enditem
