American Malinin takes men's world figure staking crown with six quads

MONTREAL, March 23 (Xinhua) -- American figure skater Ilia Malinin put on a dominant display, landing six quadruple jumps to capture his first world championships title on Saturday.

After placing third in Thursday's short program, the 19-year-old landed six clean quadruple jumps, including his trademark quad Axel to score a world record of 227.79 points in the free program on Saturday while skating to the "Succession" soundtrack to bring his total to 333.76 points, more than 20 points than the rest of the field.

Yuma Kagiyama of Japan won silver with 309.65 points and Adam Siao Him Fa of France claimed bronze with 284.39 points. Siao Him Fa climbed from 19th after the short program to third with an awe-inspiring display of his own, which included a backflip.

Two-time champion Shoma Uno of Japan, who led after the short program, was sixth in the free skating to finish fourth on 280.85 points.

Earlier on Saturday, American duo Madison Chock and Evan Bates defended their ice dance world title with a season-best total score of 222.20.

Canada's Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won silver with 219.68 points, while Italy's Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri claimed bronze with 216.52 points. Enditem
