BEIJING, April 1 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

TELECOM INDUSTRY

China's telecommunication industry registered steady expansion in the first two months of this year, official data showed.

The combined business revenue of firms in the sector totaled 292.3 billion yuan (about 41.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the period, rising 4.3 percent year on year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Combined revenue of emerging businesses, such as big data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, continued to log double-digit growth.

AS700 MANNED AIRSHIP

China's independently-developed AS700 civil manned airship has made a successful maiden ferry flight in central China's Hubei Province, and the first air vehicle is scheduled to be delivered by the end of this year.

During the flight, the airship took off from Jingmen Zhanghe Airport and landed at an airport in Jingzhou after a flight lasting one hour and 46 minutes, according to the Aviation Industry Corporation of China.

The single-capsule manned airship has a maximum capacity carrying 10 persons, including a pilot. It has a maximum take-off weight of 4,150 kg, a maximum flight range of 700 km, and a maximum endurance of 10 hours.

LARGE SPONGE FOSSIL

Chinese researchers have recently unearthed a well-preserved large sponge fossil that dates back to approximately 540 million years ago in the city of Changde, central China's Hunan Province, according to the Hunan Museum of Geology.

Described as a rare finding from the early Cambrian era, this sponge fossil holds immense scientific significance, offering invaluable insights into the early evolution of sponge animals, said Tong Guanghui, an associate researcher at the museum. Enditem
