BEIJING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.54 percent to 3,171.15 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.43 percent higher at 9,750.82 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices reached 995.4 billion yuan (about 140.1 billion U.S. dollars), up from the 887.4 billion yuan recorded on the previous trading day.
Shares related to precious metals and the poultry industry were among the biggest gainers, while those related to real estate and home appliances suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.59 percent to close at 1,875.93 points. Enditem
