TESLA MEGA FACTORY

U.S. carmaker Tesla broke ground on a mega factory in Shanghai on Thursday to manufacture its energy-storage batteries, Megapacks, a project hailed by the company as a "milestone."

The latest move underscores Tesla's commitment to investing in the world's second-largest economy, defying the rhetoric of "decoupling" and "de-risking" from China ratcheted up by some U.S. politicians.

The new plant spans an area of approximately 200,000 square meters, with a total investment of around 1.45 billion yuan (about 203.94 million U.S. dollars), according to the administration of Lin-gang Special Area of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

INVENTION PATENTS

The number of invention patents granted in China in the first four months of this year witnessed a year-on-year increase of 43.42 percent, the country's top intellectual property regulator said this week.

The latest patent data report by the China National Intellectual Property Administration revealed that over 362,000 invention patents were granted in China between January and April this year. Enterprise patents constituted the majority and exhibited the highest year-on-year growth rate when compared to those obtained by universities, research institutions, and individuals.

LAKE EVOLUTION

A new study has revealed the drivers of hydrological changes in lake systems of mid-latitude Asia, providing reference for predicting and coping with future lake water fluctuations, according to Lanzhou University.

The results showed that glacier meltwater, in combination with variable delivery of Westerlies and East Asian summer monsoon precipitation, are responsible for asynchronous lake evolution trends across mid-latitude Asia. Enditem
