BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Xinhua News Agency and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) on Friday announced a strategic partnership, with the aim of achieving a shared objective and common goal in combating desertification, land degradation and drought, and in an effort to achieve sustainable development.

President of Xinhua News Agency Fu Hua met with Ibrahim Thiaw, UN under-secretary-general and executive secretary of the UNCCD, in Beijing, and they signed a memorandum of understanding.

Noting that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the UNCCD, Fu said the mission of the UNCCD aligns closely with the philosophy of green development that China advocates. Xinhua looks forward to enhancing cooperation with the Secretariat of the UNCCD to promote experience and achievements in combating desertification worldwide, and to contribute to the advancement of global green development.

Thiaw said that China has proved through its own practices that environmental protection and economic development can mutually reinforce each other. China is expected to play an important role at the convention's upcoming Conference of the Parties, which will be held at the end of this year. It is hoped that China will help the world better understand the crucial significance of combating desertification for humanity through the stories that Xinhua publishes, he said. Enditem
