BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

FuXi AI WEATHER MODEL

Chinese scientists have upgraded an AI-powered large model, forming part of the FuXi series, for climate and weather forecasting, featuring improved accuracy. They are exploring the model's application in maritime and aviation transportation, and the new energy sector.

The Shanghai Academy of Artificial Intelligence for Science (SAIS) and Fudan University unveiled the upgraded model, known as FuXi 2.0, on Monday. It is the first global large weather model for weather routing, according to a press release of the university.

Compared to "FuXi-Subseasonal," FuXi 2.0 has made progress in terms of mid-term weather forecasting models and sub-seasonal models, targeting industries such as new energy, and aviation and maritime transportation, said Li Hao, who leads the SAIS earth science research team.

3D E-SKIN

A team of Chinese scientists has created the world's first bio-inspired electronic skin with a 3D structure that mimics three mechanical signals found in human skin.

With its intricate 3D distribution, sensory receptors in human skin adeptly perceive external forces and strain. By mimicking this spatial distribution, researchers from Tsinghua University developed an e-skin that replicates the structure of human skin, featuring its own "epidermis," "dermis" and "subcutaneous tissue."

This e-skin is capable of achieving simultaneous decoding and perception of three mechanical signals -- pressure, friction and strain -- at the physical level, according to the study published in the journal Science recently.

WILDLIFE SEED BANK

The Germplasm Bank of Wild Species in southwest China's Yunnan Province, the largest of its kind in Asia, has preserved over 11,000 kinds of wild plant seeds, according to the Kunming Institute of Botany under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

By the end of 2023, the seed bank preserved more than 94,000 plant seeds of over 11,000 species and housed the seeds of over one-third of wild plants in China, Cai Jie, director of the seed bank's germplasm collection center, told Xinhua on Wednesday.

In addition to effectively preserving wild plant seeds, plant tissue materials, plant DNA, large fungi, microbial strains, and animal genetic resources, the germplasm bank also possesses advanced genetic resource databases and information sharing management systems, as well as a technology system and research platform integrating functional gene detection, cloning, and validation.

ROBOT FOR HYDROGEN FUELING STATION

The hydrogen fueling station for CHN Energy's heavy-haul trains recently started commercial operation in Batuta, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, north China.

The station is equipped with a low-temperature resistant automatic hydrogenation robot and a high-flow hydrogenation machine, independently developed and manufactured in China.

The robot can refuel a hydrogen-powered train within 30 minutes, which will power the train for eight hours, according to CHN Energy, which added that the train boasts a range of 800 kilometers before it needs refueling. Enditem
