Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reported 31 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Friday, the regional health commission said Saturday.

The 31 patients were all in the regional capital Urumqi, according to the commission.

The region also saw eight new asymptomatic cases in Urumqi on Friday.

On Friday, seven confirmed cases were discharged from hospital after recovery while another seven asymptomatic cases had their medical observation lifted in the city.

The number of newly confirmed cases and asymptomatic cases on Friday dropped compared with the previous days, but the city's epidemic prevention and control situation remained complicated and grim, allowing no room for relaxation, said Rui Baoling, director of the Urumqi Disease Control and Prevention Center, at a press conference on Saturday.

She called on citizens to support the epidemic prevention and control measures and be vigilant with their household cleaning and sanitation.

As of Friday, Xinjiang had 547 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 109 asymptomatic cases, and 14,540 people were still under medical observation.

From July 15 to 31, Urumqi had a total of 16 COVID-19 cases discharged after recovery and another 16 asymptomatic cases released from medical observation.

Shang Yulan, deputy secretary-general of the Urumqi municipal government, said Friday the city has organized government employees, community workers and volunteers to guarantee necessary services and meet the basic needs of citizens while conducting daily temperature-taking and disinfection work in neighborhoods.

Workers have sent goods such as vegetables, cooking oil, rice and flour as well as free masks and disinfectant to low-income families, households with basic living allowances and elderly citizens who live alone, according to Shang.
