It is a traditional custom for the Chinese people to put up New Year pictures on the walls of their homes during Spring Festival. With a history of more than 200 years, the folk art of New Year woodcuts created in Pingdu, Shandong Province, enjoys a great reputation in China for its traditional design and excellent workmanship. Zhang Jizhou, a local wood engraver and artist has recently opened a workshop in an office building in downtown Qingdao where he exhibits his works and offers classes to pass on the traditional folk art to local people and students.
