The development of “smart city” projects offers the possibility for equality between people to be realized thanks to advancements in technology, said Cao Fangju, postdoctoral researcher at Tsinghua University.

Such cities, designed to incorporate the big data and information technologies that are rapidly developing in places like China, have bloomed across the country -- there were “smart city” projects in planning or under construction in more than 500 Chinese cities at the end of 2016.

A city aspiring for prosperity is required to make efforts in big data fusion when the idea of resources goes beyond just water and land to include data as well, according to Cao.

She said that huge diversity exists between different cities and there is not a template for all of them to copy, but that cities could learn from each other’s experiences, and that the development strategies should be different for already developed areas such as Singapore and newly established or developing cities such Hengqin New Area in Guangdong and Xiongan New Area in Hebei.
