Rising island Hengqin, seeking post-graduates

A developing Hengqin changes by the day attracting an increasing number of talents.

 

Hengqin, a coastal island of Zhuhai, Guangdong province, became a national new development area in 2009. Since then, extraordinary progress has been made in economic, industrial and technological aspects.

 

As a national new area and a major component of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Hengqin has accumulatively realized GDP of 79.1 billion yuan, with an average annual growth of 68 percent. It has also utilized US$2.9 billion of foreign capital with an average annual growth of 136 percent.

 

From this January to September, Hengqin realized GDP of 17 billion yuan, up 12 percent over the same period last year and paid-in overseas investment during this period totaled US$700 million, up 30 percent over the same period last year.

 

Li Weihui, deputy secretary of the CPC Hengqin New Area Committee, said the population of Hengqin is increasing fast and as of the second half of this year, university graduates, postgraduates, doctorates and post-doctorates account for a large proportion of the increased population.

 

Li introduced that newly-approved post-doctoral research centers include the centers of Zhuhai Da Hengqin Technology Development Co. Ltd., Zhuhai Titans Power Electronic Group Co. Ltd., Traditional Chinese Medicine Science and Technology Industrial Park of Co-operation between Guangdong and Macao, Guangdong Zhongxing Electronic Co. Ltd. as well as two postdoctoral innovative practice bases respectively in Zhuhai Financial Investment Holding Group Co. Ltd. and Zhuhai Hopegenes Medical Research Institute Co. Ltd.

 

Nineteen post-doctorates are working and four academician tutors have been introduced to these companies, Li added.

 

Forty-two of the world's top 500 enterprises have been introduced into the area; while 71 of China’s top 500 enterprises have also been introduced in the area.

 

The new area kicks off a series of postdoctoral activities from mid-November to mid-December, including a signing ceremony for the third phase of the Hong Kong Scholars Program, Third Symposium of Hong Kong Scholars Program, the signing ceremony of the first Macao Young Scholars Program, International Symposium on Postdoctoral System and National Postdoctoral Academic Forum. Talents are invited to share their experience of scientific research and jointly build the coastal island.

 

"We plan to attract 100 post-doctorates to settle down in Hengqin," Li said, "although there are only two years left, we are confident that we will reach the aim in light of realities and supporting policy."
