The total length of expressway in north China's Shanxi Province
is expected to reach nearly 1,340 kilometers by the end of 2005,
the province's transportation authority said.
This means that
the province will build about 900 kilometers of expressways
in the coming five years.
The province has
long suffered bad traffic conditions due to natural geographic
reasons -- its first expressway was open to traffic only four
years ago.
By the end of last
year, Shanxi had had about 450 kilometers of expressway, lagging
far behind its neighboring provinces.
According to the
province's 10th Five-Year Plan (2001--2005), the construction
of expressways will be on top of the province's work agendas.
According to an
official source, the construction of a 660-kilometer expressway
linking the province's south to the north has recently been
started.
