This major chemical industry city in Northeast China's Liaoning
Province is striving to become one of the largest petrochemical
and chemical fiber products processing bases in China during
the 10th Five-Year Plan period (2001-05), according to Chen
Shinan, Party secretary of Liaoyang.
The city will highlight
the development of the chemical, chemical fiber and plastics
industries in the next five years.
Output volumes
of these three industries will contribute more than 80 percent
to the city's total industrial output by 2005.
"The Liaoyang
Petroleum Chemical Fiber Co and the Liaoning Qingyang Chemical
Industry Co are expected to exert positive roles," Chen
said. These two enterprises are the province's largest chemical
enterprises and the main producers of chemical, chemical fiber
and plastics products in the city.
A number of technical
innovative projects will be implemented in these two enterprises
to upgrade products, said Mayor Sun Yuanliang.
"Liaoyang
has a lot of potential for the development of chemical, chemical
fiber and plastics industries thanks to its solid foundation
in these fields," Sun said.
The chemical, chemical
fiber and plastics industries have long been the pillar industries
in this newly developed industrial city.
To date, about
500 enterprises in the city are making chemical, chemical
fiber and plastics products. Some 1,000 kinds of products
are made, including industrial chemicals, chemical additives,
synthetic resin, plastic products, chemical fiber products
and chemical building materials.
Through technical
renovation, the Liaoyang Petroleum Chemical Fiber Co has grown
to be the largest aromatic hydrocarbon and chemical fiber
base in northern China with a production capacity of more
than 1 million tons of synthetic fiber monomer, synthetic
fibers, plastics and diesel oil.
Last year, the
industrial output of these two enterprises topped 11.5 billion
yuan (US$1.4 billion), accounting for 33 percent of the city's
total industrial output.
Foreign investment
is welcome to help with the growth of these industries, said
Sun.
The city will further
explore the markets for its chemical and chemical fiber products
in the western part of China by taking advantage of the economic
and trade fairs to be held in Urumqi, Wuhan and Nanchang this
year, he added.
