Shandong Province in East China has targeted its textile and
garment industry as one of the 10 traditional industries for
restructuring during the 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-05) period,
sources from the provincial government said.
Shandong is one
of the major textile industry bases in China. The textile
and garment industry is a traditional pillar industry in the
province.
Statistics from
the province indicate that by the end of 2000, the industry
had garnered US$4.7 billion from its exports, accounting for
30 per cent of the total hard currency the province earned
in 2000 and becoming the largest earner of foreign currency
in the province.
Han Yuqun, deputy
governor of the province, said that during the 2001-05 period,
the province will stress the restructuring of a group of backbone
textile and garment enterprises by applying high and new technologies.
An adjustment in
product mix will be the main focus of the restructuring, he
said. Four major steps will be taken to achieve the industry
goals:
Speed up the development
of denim serial garments, Western suits, shirts, knitwear,
fashion items and children's garment.
Give full play
to famous product producers and bring new vitality to the
sector through asset re-grouping and complementary facility
renovations.
Continue to carry
out the "four-famous" strategy of creating famous
brandnames, enterprises, designers and making the city a top
garment producer.
Bring forth light,
multi-functional and environmentally friendly garments with
high quality and high added value.
