Summary

The demand of passenger and freight transportation grew steadily. The added value of transportation, posts and telecommunications sectors in 2000 hit 491.9 billion yuan, an increase of 9.4 percent over the previous year.

The total volume of cargo transported by various means was 4,335.9 billion ton-km, a rise of 7.1 percent. Of this total, the cargo transported by railways was 1,362.4 billion ton-km, up 6.1 percent; by highways, 597.3 billion ton-km, up 4.4 percent; by waterways, 2,306.1 billion ton-km, up 8.5 percent; and by air, 4.85 billion ton-km, up 14.6 percent.

The volume of passenger transportation was 1,218.8 billion person-km, an increase of 7.9 percent. Of this total, that carried by railways was 448.8 billion person-km, up 8.5 percent; by highways, 660 billion person-km, up 6.5 percent; by waterways, 10.4 billion person-km, down 3.1 percent; and by civil aviation, 99.6 billion person-km, up 16.2 percent.

Major coastal ports handled 1.28 billion tons of cargo, up 21.7 percent, including 520 million tons of merchandise for foreign trade, an increase of 33.9 percent.
