Tibet commemorated the enthronement anniversary of the 11th Panchen Lama on December 8, 2005, ten years after Gyaincain Norbu became the highest ranking figure in Tibetan Buddhism at the age of six.
The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, started his first-ever closed-door religious retreat in the Zhaxi Lhunbo Lamasery on November 1, 2005 in the Tibetan city of Xigaze, the traditional seat for successive Panchen Lamas.
China announced on October 9 that the height of Mount Qomolangma (Everest) has been remeasured at 8,844.43 meters above sea level, nearly four meters lower than the last Chinese measurement taken in 1975.
The track laying for the 1,142-km Qinghai-Tibet Railway is almost finished, with only one km left uncompleted. The railway is scheduled to have a trial operation in July 2006, ending the no-railway history in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Two European tourists view the golden top of the Johkang Monastery in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, on August 30. During the 2005 Europe-China Tourism Forum held recently in Switzerland, Lhasa was appraised as European tourists' most favorite tourism destination, and the Potala Palace in central Lhasa was listed as European tourists' most favorite scenic spot.
Jia Qingling, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, visited workers on the worksite of the Lhasa Railway Station Tuesday. Jia praised the railway builders for their hard work and achievements. He urged them to fulfill all tasks on time so as to ensure that the Qinghai-Tibet Railway be put into official operation by July 1, 2006.
