Shanghai to Build Asia's Largest Underwater Tunnel
Adjust font size:
The construction of Asia's largest underwater highway tunnel crossing the Huangpu River is underway in east China's Shanghai.

As the hub crossing the Huangpu River in the northern part of Shanghai, this two-way eight-lane tunnel will connect the Sancha Port in Pudong District with Wusongkou Park in Puxi District, constituting an important part of the outer highway loop line around Shanghai.

An innovative technology will be used for this project. There will be seven 43 meter-wide precast pipes sunk to the bottom of the river before they are joined and buried to form the 2,880 meter-long tunnel.

It will take 2 billion yuan (about US$240 million) and three years to complete the project.
