US Open: China Through to Women's Doubles Quarterfinals

The Chinese duo Zheng Jie and Yan Zi have cruised into the final eight of the women's doubles event at the US Open.

Zheng and Yan outclassed fifth-seeded Slovakian Daniela Hantuchova and Japan's Ai Sugiyama 6-6, 3-6, 7-5 in their third round match on September 5. The quarterfinal entrance equals China's best performance by Peng Shuai and Li Huizhi from Taiwan at the 2004 Australian Open.

However, China's Olympic champions Li Ting and Sun Tiantian bowed out at the final 16 after losing to American Martina Navratilova and Germany's Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-2, 6-7(5), 1-6.

Zheng and Yan meet Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain in the quarterfinals.

The four ladies last met in the quarterfinals of the Athens Olympics in 2004, a match that saw the Chinese go down 6-1, 6-1.
