Progress in Issues of Humanity, Society And Environment

In its process of economic and social development, China is paying more attention to issues of humanity, society and environment, President of the World Confederation of Production Science (WCPS) John Heap said in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, on Monday.

Heap, speaking at the ongoing 14th World Productivity Congress (WPC), said that some countries like China and India are proving to be increasingly competitive.

But their success has given rise to problems Heap said, adding: "Their task now is to meet the standards and expectations of a buoyant economy and to avoid the 'boom and burst' cycle that often characterizes high growth economies."

According to Heap, failing to do so could create economic and social imbalances that might jeopardize what has been achieved so far.

"However, the current five year plan shows that China has recognized some of the problems that growth has created. There is a commendable commitment to opening up parts of the country that have not yet benefited from this growth, and doing this by providing a solid transport infrastructure," Heap said.

He cited China's goal to reduce energy costs per unit of GDP by 20 percent over the next five years, saying: "The plan shows that China is already paying more attention to issues of humanity, society and environment."

With the theme of Pursuing Scientific and Sustainable Growth in Productivity and Performance, the 14th WPC has brought together some 1,000 international participants from all sectors of industry, commerce and public services.

This is the second time China is hosting the WPC, the first being in 2001.
