Trash-Burning Power Plant in Zhuhai

A trash-burning power plant went into formal production recently Zhuhai, the nearest Chinese mainland city to Macao.

According to local sources, the plant began operation in July 1998 and cost 200 million yuan (US$24.1 million).

The power plant burned 29,446 tons of trash during trial operation that began this July, accounting for 80 percent of the city’s total trash produced daily, and generated 4.78 million kw of electricity.

Trash is commonly buried in Chinese cities. The operation of the new power plant is heralded as a good way to turn garbage into useful electricity and to improve the urban environment.
