Jiang Meets Deputies and Members From HK, Macao

President Jiang Zemin and two other senior Chinese leaders met Monday in Beijing deputies to the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) and members of the Ninth Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee from Hong Kong and Macao, who are attending the annual sessions of the NPC and CPPCC National Committee.

Jiang Zemin, Li Peng, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and Li Ruihuan, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, were greeted with applause as they entered the East Hall of the Great Hall of the People Monday afternoon.

Among those present at the meeting were Vice-Premier Qian Qichen, Henry Fok and Ma Man-kei, vice-chairmen of the NPC Standing Committee, Tung Chee-hwa, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), and Edmund Ho Hau-wah, chief executive of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR).

Jiang fully affirmed the work by Tung and the HKSAR government. He said that the central government will fully support the efforts of the HKSAR government, led by Tung, in carrying out the Basic Law and ensuring Hong Kong's prosperity and stability.

Jiang also said that the Macao SAR government headed by Edmund Ho Hau-wah has won the trust and support of the public.

Macao has achieved social stability and economic recovery since its return to the motherland.

He expressed his hope that the Macao SAR government will continue its efforts in economic development and social stability with the support of people from all walks of life.
