Macao Newspapers Hail NPC, CPPCC Sessions

All leading Macao Chinese-language newspapers carried editorials, stories or photos Tuesday on topics of general interest at the fourth sessions of the Ninth National People's Congress (NPC) and the Ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Giving prominent coverage on the event, the Macao Daily News said in an editorial that the Outline of the Tenth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development (2001-2005) is both enterprising and pragmatic, which turns a speed-oriented national economy to the track of combining the growth speed with the efficiency of the economy.

The largest newspaper in Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) said that the successful completion of the Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000), the reform of State-owned enterprises and a series of principles and policies featuring Deng Xiaoping's theory will have long-term influence on the country's future.

Another focus of Macao's media Tuesday is the concern and encouragement that State leaders showed for Macao SAR. The Macao Daily News, the Jornal Va Kio and Tai Chung Pou all carried the story of President Jiang Zemin's meeting with Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of the Macao SAR. During the meeting, Jiang said that the Macao SAR government has won the trust and support from the public, and Macao has achieved social stability and economic recovery since its return to the motherland.

Macao newspapers have also covered the details of the Government Work Report delivered by Premier Zhu Rongji, especially the parts related to the successful implementation of "One Country, Two Systems" in Hong Kong and Macao and the peaceful reunification of the motherland.
