China's Electricity Output Exceeds Consumption by 10 Bln Kwh Last Year

China's electricity output rose by 13 percent to reach 2.83 trillion kilowatt-hours last year, exceeding consumption by ten billion kilowatt-hours, according to the State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

"The energy shortage ended in 2006, "said You Quan, chairman of the commission.

China added 100 gigawatts of new electricity capacity last year, bringing the total power capacity to 600 gigawatts, said You.

China's GDP growth grew by 10.7 percent in 2006. The government has been striving to convert the energy-intensive economy to a more sustainable model with a lower energy demand.
