Adjust font size:

Five students were drowned in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality on Saturday, confirmed local sources.

The tragedy occurred at about 4 PM when five girls from the Shibajie Primary School in the Dongshan Village of Baisha Town swam in the nearby Luxi River after class. A girl suffered a cramp. When three others hurried to help, the four girls were all drowned.

The fifth girl managed to climb ashore and sought help from Yang Bin, a boy from the Shankou Middle School who happened to pass by. Unfortunately the warm-hearted Yang got drowned.

Local police and officials are making further investigation into the case.
