Story of the Golden Foal
Adjust font size:

Long ago, droughts and floods often took place in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, making the lives of people living around the area very arduous.

However, Hetao (the Great Bend of the Yellow River) prefecture of Inner Mongolia often enjoyed abundant harvests of all crops every year. The Hetao people were well fed and well clad and they lived and worked in peace and contentment. Finally, it was found that there was a golden foal hidden in the section of the Yellow River that passes through Hetao. With the blesses of the golden foal, the Hetao people enjoyed the special favor of god.

Therefore, southerners traveled over 10,000 km to Hetao. They wanted to take the golden foal to the south. Just as the southerners arrived in Hetao, the golden foal appeared from the Yellow River. It galloped away from south to north at a high speed, passing Dengkou of Bayannao'er City, Hangjin Rear Banner, Urad Rear Banner, Linhe and Wuyuan, and eventually laid down at the Gobi before Urad Front Banner.

The southerners continued to pursue the golden foal. It sprang to its feet and jumped into the Yellow River, making it impossible for people to find it. It was strange that shortly after that, the ground where the golden foal passed began to crack and shake, and long deep ditches appeared, today's Wula River and Wujia River. The place where the golden foal once laid down became a deep pit, which is today's Wuliangsuhai. When the golden foal ran for the second time, its halter drew a waterway that led to the Yellow River, making the dried Urad Grassland connect with the Yellow River on both sides and forming a fishing village and watery region like Wuliangsuhai. Who dares to say that this good fortune was not because of the golden foal?
