Zhuhai police smashed a soccer betting ring with an estimated 70.58 million yuan (US$8.54m) involved in raids in December.
After six months of investigation, police uncovered a large Zhuhai-based soccer betting ring linking gambling in Shenzhen, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Xi'an.
Police arrested 30 suspects, confiscated 990,000 yuan (US$119,610) and HK$179,000 with details of 80 bank accounts in a joint campaign targeting 22 gambling venues on Dec. 22.
Investigations revealed gamblers had bet huge amounts, around tens of thousands of yuan, in a single stake. One man's bank account showed deposits and withdrawals involving around 130 million yuan (US$15.7 million) in six months.
Gambling agencies were offering a credit ceiling of 1 to 2 million yuan in the form of deposits.
