A delegation sent by the Chinese central authorities arrived in Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Saturday to attend the celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the founding of the ethnic autonomous region in southwest China.
A pair of rails were laid down at 5,072 meters above sea level in Tibet's Amdo on August 24, making a new topnotch of the world's railways. The track laying location at Tanggula Mountain Pass is 255 meters higher than the century-old record of world's railway altitude previously kept by Peru at 4,817 meters above sea level for its tracks from the Pacific coast up to Andes range.

With a governmental fund of 4.5 million yuan (US$554,870), the Lhasa Special Education School was founded in 2000. As the only government-run school for disabled children in Tibet, it now has 28 teachers and 120 children in nine classes of five grades. Eight classes in the school are for deaf kids and the other one is for blind kids.
An auto-donating ceremony was held at the Potala Palace Square on August 18. East China's Anhui Province donates 22 self-produced autos to Tibet for celebrating the coming 40th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Nearly 100 foreign and domestic photographers are showing their own perceptions of the Tibet Autonomous Region through their pictures in a photographic exhibition that opened in Beijing on August 11, in a bid to mark the region's 40th founding anniversary.
Shoton Festival kicks off on August 4 in Tibet. This year's celebrations coincide with the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Tibet Autonomous Region. Thousands of believers and tourists attend the Buddha Painting Unfolding ceremony at Zhaibung Monastery in Lhasa during the opening ceremony. The Shoton Festival is one of the grandest festivals in Tibet.
Tibet currently has 232,000 hectares of cultivated land. Important farm produce includes winter high-land barley, winter wheat, spring wheat, spring highland barley, peas, broad beans, potatoes, rape and beets. High-land barley and spring wheat have long been cultivated in Tibet.
