China-France Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

China and France both have a long history and a brilliant culture, and this adds a unique character to their interactions. During his state visit to France in January 2004, the then Chinese President Hu Jintao signed a joint statement with his French counterpart to upgrade the bilateral comprehensive partnership to a comprehensive strategic partnership. France thus became the first Western country to establish a comprehensive strategic partnership with China. The two countries have since then seen their relationship make healthy progress. The interests and values they share regarding global governance and European integration continue to increase, as does their complementarity in economy and trade.

In January 2018 French President Emmanuel Macron made a state visit to China, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping. Xi pointed out that bilateral relations are at a new starting point, and China is willing to increase exchanges with France, build up mutual trust and cooperation, and give a new impetus to the comprehensive strategic partnership. The two state leaders agreed to carry on their friendship and build a close and lasting comprehensive strategic partnership.
