The spirit of perseverance

The spirit of perseverance has long been championed by Xi Jinping, who on many occasions has referred to it through the analogy of “hammering in nails.”

At the Second Plenary Session of the 18th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on February 28, 2013, he elaborated on the idea as follows: “When we use a hammer to drive in a nail, a single knock is often not enough; we must keep knocking until it is well in place. Then we can proceed to knock the next one, and continue driving in nails till the job is completely done. If we knock here and there without focusing on the nail, we may end up squandering our efforts altogether.”

By “keep knocking,” he suggests force and tenacity like a hammer driving in a nail. By “proceeding to knock the next nail after getting the first right in place,” he encourages full commitment leading to solid progress. Only in this way can one make sure that one starts well, ends well, and works painstakingly to produce the best possible results.

In championing this spirit, Xi calls on CPC members and officials to focus on their work and achieve tangible results.
