The spirit of the revolutionary base area in Taihang Mountains

July 7, 1937 witnessed the outbreak of China's nationwide War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. In line with the decisions of the CPC Central Committee and Mao Zedong, Zhu De led the Eighth Route Army to cross the Yellow River and build strong base areas in the Taihang Mountains. To better lead the resistance against the invaders, the army's headquarters and the office of the CPC North Bureau were also seated in the mountains. In the following eight years, the CPC led the army and the civilian population to fight with the invaders and nurtured a spirit of the revolutionary base areas in the Taihang Mountains.

The spirit is epitomized by the ability to face danger and death without fear, to unite as one to win victory, and to demonstrate great resilience and selfless dedication.

In May 2009 Xi Jinping explained how to promote this spirit, saying that one must have lofty ideals and remain loyal to the Party, to the people, and to the cause of socialism; one must govern for the people and keep close ties with the people, be indomitable and press forward in the face of difficulties, preserve the political integrity and best standards of conduct of the Party, and create impetus for sound and rapid economic and social development.
