The spirit of the revolutionaries at the Red Crag

This spirit was nurtured in Chongqing, the KMT ruling center, during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the War of Liberation. To achieve national independence and liberation, and to consolidate the united front against the Japanese invaders, a large number of Chinese Communists and revolutionaries worked under Zhou Enlai and other CPC leadership in Chongqing from January 1939 to May 1946. Persevering in the War of Resistance, in unity and in progress, and opposed to capitulation, division, and retrogression, they struggled with the KMT die-hards in the principle of self-defense, well-preparedness and certain restraint. Keeping the national interest at heart, these patriots braved untold dangers and defended the national united front, giving rise to the spirit of the revolutionaries at the Red Crag, named after the village where the Communist leadership was located in suburban Chongqing from 1939 to 1946.

In Chongqing Chinese Communists worked together with the KMT for the sake of the united front, but they kept their distance during these contacts and remained untainted by KMT corruption. Their fiery struggle tempered an iron will and a spirit that can be encapsulated in four words: patriotism, unity, struggle, and dedication.
