Four National Cultural Parks
China's Outline of the 14th Five-year Plan (2021- 2025) for Economic and Social Development and Long- range Objectives Through the Year 2035, unveiled in March 2021, proposed to build national cultural parks themed on the Great Wall, the Grand Canal, the Long March, and the Yellow River. This makes Henan the only province to engage in the construction of all of these four national cultural parks and a key area for the construction of the Yellow River National Cultural Park. Siezing this opportunity, Henan has launched a number of signature cultural projects. More than 300 projects have been planned, of which 40 key ones are in full swing.
The Yellow River National Cultural Park involves 14 cities in Henan, featuring "one core, three poles, one corridor, and nine belts." The core refers to the Zhengzhou- Kaifeng-Luoyang core area for the preservation and innovation of the Yellow River civilization; the poles refer to the three cross-provincial regions (Henan-Shanxi- Shaanxi, Henan-Hebei-Shandong, and Henan-Anhui- Jiangsu); the corridor refers to the cultural tourism corridor along the trunk stream of the Yellow River; and the belts refer to the nine Yellow River-themed cultural tourism belts. The Grand Canal National Cultural Park involves nine cities in Henan. Efforts will be made to protect the Grand Canal's Henan sections – the Tongji Canal and the Yongji Canal of the Sui-Tang Grand Canal and the Huitong River of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. A total of 25 core parks, 20 routes, and 150 feature spots will be built along the ancient course of the Tongji Canal in Luoyang, Zhengzhou, Kaifeng, and Shangqiu and along that of the Yongji Canal in the Jiaozuo-Xinxiang, Anyang-Hebi, and Puyang sections.
The Great Wall National Cultural Park involves seven cities in Henan. This will help protect the Great Wall sections built by the State of Chu, State of Wei, and State of Zhao in the Spring and Autumn and the Warring States periods more than 2,000 years ago.
The Long March National Cultural Park involves six cities in Henan. The localities involved will be responsible for the preservation of the old revolutionary area in the Dabie Mountains and the Long March route of the 25th Army of the Red Army.
