The International Council for Industrial and Applied Mathematics has named one of its prizes after a Chinese scientist for the first time. The "Su Buqing Prize" was formally established in Beijing today, reported CCTV Thursday.
ICIAM represents the highest level of the applied mathematics world. A number of prizes established under the Council, such as the Pioneer Prize and Lagrange Prize, have long been influential in the field of international mathematics.
The new Su Buqing prize will award mathematicians who have made special contributions to economics, society as well as science and technology.
Su Buqing was a Chinese mathematician, educator and renowned social activist; and member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He passed away in Shanghai last year at the age of 101.
