Hebei Province

    

 

Called "Ji" for short, Hebei is situated in north China, on the coast of the Bohai Sea. Surrounding Beijing and close to Tianjin, Heibei covers 190,000 square km, with a population of over 67.69 million. Shijiazhuang is the provincial capital.

 

Shanxi Province

    

 

Called "Jin" for short, Shanxi is situated west of the Taihangshan Mountains in north China. It covers 150,000 square km, with a population of over 33.14 million. Taiyuan is the provincial capital.
 

Liaoning Province

    

 

Called "Liao" for short, Liaoning is situated in the southern part of northeast China and faces the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea on the south, with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea lying to its east. It covers 150,000 square km, with a population of 42.1 million. Shenyang is the provincial capital.
 

Jilin Province

    

 

Called "Ji" for short, Jilin is situated in the middle of northeast China, bordered by Russia and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea on the southeast. It covers 180,000 square km, with a population of nearly 27.04 million. Changchun is the provincial capital.
 

Heilongjiang Province

    

 

Called "Hei" for short, Heilongjiang is situated in the northernmost part of northeast China, adjoining Russia on the east and north. It covers 460,000 square km, with a population of 38.15 million. Harbin is the provincial capital.  

Jiangsu Province

    

 

Called "Su" for short, Jiangsu is situated on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River along the coast of the Yellow Sea. It covers 100,000 square km, with a permanent population of nearly 74.06 million at the end of 2003. Nanjing is the provincial capital.
 

Zhejiang Province

    

 

Called "Zhe" for short, Zhejiang is situated in the central part of east China along the coast of the East China Sea. It covers 100,000 square km, with a permanent population of nearly 46.8 million at the end of 2003. Hangzhou is the provincial capital.
 

Anhui Province

    

 

Called "Wan" for short, Anhui is situated in the northwest of east China, with both the Yangtze River and Huaihe River crossing it. It covers more than 130,000 square km, having a population of 64.1 million at the end of 2003. Hefei is the provincial capital.
 

Fujian Province

    

 

Called "Min" for short, Fujian is situated on the southeastern coast of China and faces Taiwan Province across the sea. It covers 120,000 square km, with a permanent population of 34.88 million at the end of 2003. Fuzhou is the provincial capital.
 

Jiangxi Province

    

 

Called "Gan" for short, Jiangxi is situated south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It covers 160,000 square km, with a population of over 42.22 million. Nanchang is the provincial capital.
 

Shandong Province

    

 

Called "Lu" for short, Shandong is situated on the lower reaches of the Yellow River, bordering the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea. It covers 150,000 square km, with a population of 91.25 million. Jinan is the provincial capital.
 

Henan Province

    

 

Called "Yu" for short, Henan, which formed the major part of the Central Plains in ancient China, is situated on the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River. It covers 160,000 square km, with a population of 96.67 million. Zhengzhou is the provincial capital.
 

Hubei Province

    

 

Called "E" for short, Hubei is situated north of Dongtinghu Lake on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It covers 180,000 square km, with a population of nearly 60.02 million, of whom about 25.75 million live in urban areas. Wuhan is the provincial capital.
 

Hunan Province

    

 

Called "Xiang" for short, Hunan is situated south of Dongtinghu Lake, along the southern banks on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It covers 210,000 square km, with a population of nearly 66.63 million. Changsha is the provincial capital.
 

Guangdong Province

    

 

Called "Yue" for short, Guangdong is situated south of the Nanling Mountain, along the coast of the South China Sea. It covers 180,000 square km, with a permanent population of over 79.54 million at the end of 2003. Guangzhou is the provincial capital.
 

Hainan Province

    

 

Called "Qiong" for short, Hainan is situated off the southern coast of China and faces Guangdong Province across the Qiongzhou Strait. Encompassing the Hainan Island, and the Xisha, Nansha and Zhongsha Islands and the surrounding seas, it has a land area of 34,000 square km, and its permanent population approached 8.11 million at the end of 2003. Haikou is the provincial capital.
 

Sichuan Province

    

 

Called "Chuan" or "Shu" for short, Sichuan is situated on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River in the southwest of China. It covers 480,000 square km, with a population of over 87 million. Chendu is the provincial capital.
 

Guizhou Province

    

 

Called "Qian" or "Gui" for short, Guizhou is situated in the east of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, southwest China. It covers 170,000 square km, with a population of nearly 38.7 million. Guiyang is the provincial capital.
 

Yunnan Province

    

 

Called "Dian" or "Yun" for short, Yunnan is situated on the southwestern frontier of China and bordered by Myanmar, Laos and Viet Nam. It covers 380,000 square km, with a population of nearly 43.76 million. Kunming is the provincial capital. 
 

Shaanxi Provinc

    

 

Called "Shaan" or "Qin" for short, Shaanxi is situated on the middle reaches of the Yellow River. It covers 190,000 square km, with a population of nearly 36.9 million. Xi'an is the provincial capital.
 

Gansu Province

    

 

Called "Gan" or "Long" for short, Gansu is situated on the middle reaches of the Yellow River in northwest China, with its northwestern part adjacent to Mongolia. It covers 390,000 square km, with a population of over 26.03 million. Lanzhou is the provincial capital.
 

Qinghai Province

    

 

Called "Qing" for short, Qinghai is situated on the upper reaches of the Yangtze and Yellow rivers in west China. It covers 720,000 square km, with a population of about 5.34 million at the end of 2003. Xining is the provincial capital.
 

Taiwan Province

    

 

Called "Tai" for short, Taiwan is situated on the continental shelf off the southeastern coast of China's mainland, faces the Pacific Ocean on the east and Fujian Province on the west across the Taiwan Strait, and is bounded on the south by Bash Channel, with the Ryukyu Islands lying to its northeast. Taiwan is the largest island of China, covering 36,000 square km. According to the statistics provided by relevant authorities of Taiwan, the province had a population of 22.61 million at the end of 2003. Taipei is the provincial capital.
