The damming of the diversion canal of the Three Gorges Project on the
Yangtze River is completed. As the most complicated construction project
in the world's hydroelectric history, it surpasses the two previous dammings
on the Yangtze regarding hydraulic indicators, one for the construction
of the Gezhouba Power Plant in 1981 and the other for the construction
of the dam of the Three Gorges Project in 1997.

Congress is held in Beijing. The meeting, which witnesses a smooth transition
of CPC leadership, establishes the important thought of the "Three
Represents," together with Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and
Deng Xiaoping Theory, as guiding ideology for the CPC.

The 4,500-year-old ruins of the Baodun Culture is excavated
in the suburbs of Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province.
It is the earliest human habitation discovered in the Chengdu Plain.
21 Scientists at the
China National Center for Gene Research complete 10 percent of the genome
sequence of japonica, one of the most widely cultivated subspecies of
rice in China and other Asian regions. Also on that day, the British science
journal Nature publishes Chinese scientists' findings with regard to the
precise sequencing of rice chromosome four.

2 Archaeologists unearth more than 100 colored terra cotta
warriors in a mausoleum of the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-A.D. 220) in Zhangqiu
City, Shandong Province. It is the country's third largest terra cotta
pit, following those found in the Mausoleum of Emperor Qinshihuang in
Xi'an and Yangjiawa in Xianyang, Shaanxi Province.
