Wang Xuan, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and
computer application specialist, and Huang Kun, a CAS academician and
expert in solid-state physics, are given the 2001 State Preeminent Science
and Technology Award, China's top sci-tech award, by President Jiang Zemin
in Beijing. Each also receives 5 million yuan as part of the award. Winners
of other national awards for science and technology are also honored at
the awards ceremony, which is jointly sponsored by the Central Committee
of the Communist Party of China and the State Council.
7 Development of China's
third-generation mobile communication technology, a key state scientific
research program, passes the evaluation of an experts' panel, marking
a major breakthrough in attaining core technologies in this field. TD-SCDMA
(Time Division - Synchronous CDMA) proposed by China is approved by the
International Telecommunication Union as a member of its IMT-2000 system
family for the Third Generation Mobile Telecommunication Systems.

Yang Yang, 26, wins China's first winter Olympic gold medal with a time
of 44.187 seconds in the women's 500-meter short-track speed skating final
at Salt Lake City, the United States. One week later, she wins her second
gold by taking the 1,000-meter final with a time of 1:36.991.
