HK Filmmakers Joy in Ang Lee's Success in Oscar

After the news of Ang Lee becoming the first Chinese director to win the Best Director Oscar by Brokeback Mountain, joy and delight spread through Hong Kong's film circle and filmmakers thought it is inspiring to local film production.

 

Ang Lee, in the eyes of a number of Hong Kong directors, is not merely talented and successful, but also his humility and being zeal for filmmaking were always impressive.

 

Being Lee's old good friend, local director Johnny To feels glory about Lee being the first ever Chinese snatching Oscar for directing.

 

Chinese people has eventually created a new page for Oscar's history, indicating that Chinese directors should continue to move forward, and more chances would come in the future, said To.

 

To said Lee was a person with genuine ability and learning and that was the reason why he received identification from Western people.

 

"Sometimes there's no need to be cutesy, work intently and quietly like Ang Lee does, do the best as you can and that's it," said To who also believed that Hong Kong filmmakers can also get good results if they have the same attitude.

 

Stanley Tong, who also had the experience in making film in Hollywood of America, was also happy to see Lee's achievement. "It's absolutely the glory of Chinese, I think all Chinese directors share the same feeling," told Tong.

 

Even in the unfavorable days of his career, Lee still showed his persistent in filmmaking, such attitude made Tong much admired. What's more was Lee's skills in producing literary film and the exquisiteness in it that won Tong's appreciation.

 

High appraisement of Lee's ways of getting along with others was also given by Tong, who said that Lee's humility and courtesy were worth to learn.

 

Another local director Peter Chan said that Lee deserved the award when talking about the new Oscar winning director.

 

Chan has seen quite a number of nominated films of this year's Academy Awards including Brokeback Mountain which he thought was superb, hot in Oscar.

 

Stanley Kwan, who has also picked homosexuality to become the theme in his film productions before, said that Lee being awarded best director is a proof that he has already got into the mainstream of American films.

 

He said that Lee's greatest advantage was that he knew who to use the best method to deal with the subject matter of Western films, which in turn, allowed Chinese and Western to merge subtly.

 

Besides directors, actors also shared the joy of Lee's success. International film star Chow Yun Fat who worked together with Lee in the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon said he was full of confidence that Lee would took the prize after viewing Brokeback Mountain. He was sure Lee would be awarded the Best Picture Oscar for his talent in the future.

 

Super star Jacky Chan said any Chinese got prize in the Oscar would make him happy. He said Lee was the glory of Chinese people and has created a heartening effect in Hong Kong's film circle.
