What's New in Chinese Media

People's Daily Online Takes on a New Look

People's Daily Online (www.people.com.cn) launched its newly designed homepage on December 26, 2006 to mark the website's 10th anniversary.

The new homepage adopts a wide web page suitable for monitors with a resolution of 1024X768, containing more information than before. With this thoughtful redesign, the website gives users a more powerful visual impact and a completely different web surfing experience.

The Chinese homepage features a series of distinct sections—from top to bottom, major news, newspaper-website interaction, community, finance, regional news, art and sports, entertainment, video, and English news.

The section devoted to the interaction between printed newspapers and the website has undergone a notable improvement. More contents from People's Daily and other printed publications of the newspaper group have been posted online. This collaboration and information sharing enables the website to offer better services to its users, thereby enhancing its influence.

People's Daily Online was initially launched on January 1, 1997 as a comprehensive website of People's Daily, with a focus on news information. It is one of the largest websites in China offering services in Chinese and several foreign languages.

China Daily Expands

In January 2007, China Daily, China's only national English daily newspaper, expanded from 16 pages to 24 pages, the largest ever expansion in its 25-year history.

A number of new columns have been added in the spirit of offering readers at home and abroad multi-perspective and in-depth reporting and background information on domestic and international news and analyses of the trend of major news events. In particular, the new edition provides a space for leading Chinese and foreign columnists to share their insightful ideas on world events.

After the expansion, China Daily will interact more closely with readers on its website, which features sections such as e-papers, web survey and forum.

China Daily first rolled off the printing press on June 1, 1981 and is now available in over 150 countries and regions.

Chineplus Makes Debut in France

Chineplus magazine hit the newsstands in France on November 15, 2006 after two years' intensive preparations. The business and current affairs magazine introduces China to corporate executives and decision makers as well as other readers keen on the country. It analyzes China's most important market news in columns such as briefs, industry analysis, economic indicators and exclusive coverage and interviews. It also runs articles on art and travel.

The magazine sells at 5 euros per copy and has a circulation of 50,000 copies. Dozens of European newspapers and online media outlets reported Chineplus debut, showing deep interest in this newly launched magazine.

The magazine is operated collaboratively by Chinese and French media organizations. Under their agreement, China News Service provides Hachette Filipacchi Medias with a number of Chinese stories for each issue. The French media giant then chooses the articles it needs and publishes them in French.
