Time-honored Chinese Brands

Foreign visitors to China are partly attracted by its tasty and genuine delicacies. For the forthcoming 2008 Olympic Games, more restaurants in Beijing are offering menus in both Chinese and English. At times this leads to mistranslations such as "four glad meatballs" or "tofu made by a speckled woman."

To change this, the Science & Technology Translators Association of the Chinese Academy of Science, the Beijing Traditional Trademark Association, the American Translators Association (China), and the School of Translation Studies under Beijing Foreign Studies University jointly initiated a voluntary campaign to correct mistranslations.

During the period from August 6-September 25, time-honored Chinese brands will be given correct and more exact English names, and the activity is open to all translators in English, French, Russian, Spanish, German, Japanese and Korean worldwide.
