In 2001, the business volume of the postal and telecommunications service totaled 437 billion yuan, up 24 percent over 2000. At the end of the year, total telephone switching capacity of office exchanges reached 200 million lines. There were 179 million fixed telephone users, of whom 111 million were urban users and 68 million were rural users. Mobile telephone users numbered 144.8 million, making China a country with most mobile telephone users in the world. There were 26 telephones per 100 people in China, and the number of subscribers to CHINANET service exceeded 30 million at the end of the year.
