Various undertakings involving culture and art, radio, film and television, press and publishing developed rapidly. At the end of 2001, China had 2,621 art ensembles, 2,899 cultural centers, 2,689 public libraries and 1,394 museums. There were 311 radio stations and 770 medium and short wave broadcast transmitting and relay stations throughout China, with radio broadcast programs covering 92.9 percent of the nation's total population. There were 358 TV stations, offering TV programs to 94.1 percent of the population. The cable TV subscribers in China numbered 88.03 million. A total of 88 feature films and 66 popular science, documentary and cartoon films were produced. The year 2001 saw the publishing of 21.6 billion copies of national and provincial newspapers, 2.9 billion copies of magazines and 6.3 billion volumes of books. There were 3,885 archives in China at the end of the year and 48.17 million files were open to the public.
