Summary



  The living standard of urban and rural residents further improved. In 2001, the annual per-capita disposable income of urban residents was 6,860 yuan, a real increase of 8.5 percent over 2000. The per-capita net income of rural residents was 2,366 yuan, a real increase of 4.2 percent, of which, the per-capita net cash income was 1,748 yuan, a real increase of 5.7 percent. Residents' housing conditions continued to improve. The year 2001 saw completion of 540 million square meters of dwelling structures in urban areas and 740 million square meters in rural areas. The Engel coefficient for urban and rural families stood at 37.9 percent and 47.8 percent respectively, both down by 1.3 percentage points compared with 2000.
