Maria Sharapova, who backs to world top ranking this week, is ready for next week's China Open WTA tournament, which boasts a tougher field than its inaugural edition.
The Russian, who finished off her US Open journey in the semifinals, told local media on Tuesday through a phone call from New York that she was happy to see more women stars show up in the second edition of the Beijing event.
"I go there to play and would like to play against strong opponents. I always enjoy high-level competition," said Sharapova.
The last year's semifinalist in Beijing would face challenges from newcomers Lindsay Davenport and five-time grand slam champion Venus Williams, along with defending champion Serena Williams.
But Sharapova did not give exact time for her arrival, saying "early next week".
The current world number one, without a single Grand Slam title this year, said she never thought of reaching the top spot at the age of 18.
"But there's room to improve. I'm keep working on my game to improve my condition, my body and physical strength," she said.
Sharapova became world number one for the first time on August 22, bumping Davenport from the top spot for the first time since October.
But Davenport, who missed much of the summer with a back injury, went back to No. 1 the following week after winning at NewHaven.
