Chen Zhong, duo Olympic taekwondo champion, dominated the final showdown in the women's over 67kg category on Sunday while Liu Xiaobo from Beijing won the gold in the men's over 80kg category after his final opponent Zhu Feng of Zhejiang gave up the match due to injury.
On the last day of taekwondo competitions of the 10th National Games, Chen, from Henan province, beat Jing Rui from Chinese Army 2-0, who walked away from the match in the third round in the final citing injury.
In 2002's Busan Asiad, Chen sustained an injury on the crucial ligament of her right knee, which became an recurring injury. In March this year, she had an operation on it.
"Compared with international tournaments, it's easier to play at national level," Chen said in confidence.
The bronze medal went to Zhao Jing of hosts Jiangsu, who defeated Li Donghua of Shaanxi 5-4 in the playoff for the third place.
The 21-year-old Liu Xiaobo, a Beijing native, was called into the Beijing team in 2001. He said, "Even if my opponent didn't give up the final match, I can still beat him because in the qualifiers for the taekwondo finals, I have already nipped him."
Liu won a bronze medal in 2001 National Games and came off witha gold in 2003 National Champions Tournament.
Liu Guangsong from Shandong, bronze medalist in the 9th National Games, still ended up with the third place, beating defending champion Men Fengwei from Chinese Army 5-2 in the playoff.
