Kurten falls in first round of Brazil Open
Adjust font size:

The first match of Gustavo "Guga" Kurten's farewell tour lasted 57 minutes as he was eliminated on Tuesday in the first round of the 2008 Brazil Open.

Along side his 16 years old doubles partner Andre Baran, Gustavo Kurten lost to the Italians Filippo Volandri and Fabio Fognini 6-3, 6-3.

This was Guga's first game after he announced his retirement from the sport.

Baran gave the crowd something to cheer about when the Brazilian team went up 2-1 due to his excellent service in the first set.

Volandri, who lost to Guga last year in the singles tournament, did not seem concentrated in the beginning of the game and he made two service errors which led to a tied game.

In the seventh and ninth game, Baran and Guga were beaten and lost the set 6-3.

The Brazilians broke Forgini's serve and appeared on the score board 2-1. Afterwards, the Italians regained control and won five games in a row.

Guga plays again this Tuesday night in the singles tournament against Carlos Berlocq of Argentina.
